If you've recently received an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for your property or business, you may have come across codes like C1, C2, and C3. But what do these mean, and how urgent are they?
At RCD Electrical, we believe in clear, straightforward advice. As NICEIC-approved professionals, we not only conduct EICR inspections across London but also help our clients fully understand their reports and rectify any faults found.
Below, we explain what each EICR code means, how it affects your property, and what actions you should take.
What Is an EICR?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) assesses the safety and condition of the fixed electrical systems within a building. It’s an essential document for landlords, homeowners, and business owners alike.
After an EICR inspection, each issue found is graded using a specific classification code: C1, C2, or C3, depending on the severity of the fault.
C1 – Danger Present: Immediate Action Required
Meaning:
A C1 classification means that the inspector has found a fault that presents an immediate danger to people. The risk of fire, electrocution, or serious injury is considered active and current.
Examples include:
What You Must Do:
This is the most serious rating. Immediate remedial action must be taken. In most cases, our electricians at RCD Electrical will isolate the dangerous circuit or make it safe on the spot, then provide a quote for full repair.
EICR Outcome:
Your report will be marked Unsatisfactory until the C1 issue is resolved.
C2 – Potentially Dangerous: Urgent Attention Needed
Meaning:
A C2 code indicates that a fault is not immediately dangerous but could become dangerous if left unaddressed.
Examples include:
-
No RCD protection for bathroom circuits
-
Faulty bonding or earthing
-
Damaged cables or sockets showing signs of wear
What You Must Do:
You should arrange remedial work as soon as possible. While not as urgent as C1, C2 faults can still lead to serious safety issues if ignored. RCD Electrical can handle all required repairs promptly, keeping your property compliant.
EICR Outcome:
Any C2 finding will result in an Unsatisfactory report, and the installation is not considered electrically safe until fixed.
C3 – Improvement Recommended
Meaning:
A C3 classification means that there is no immediate or potential danger, but an improvement would enhance the safety of the electrical installation.
Examples include:
-
Missing notices or labels on consumer units
-
Outdated fittings or components still working but not up to modern standards
-
Use of materials that were acceptable when installed but now superseded
What You Must Do:
C3 items do not require urgent action. However, they are worth addressing during future upgrades to avoid developing into more serious issues later. RCD Electrical can recommend the best upgrades based on your property type.
EICR Outcome:
A report with only C3 codes is generally considered Satisfactory.
What About FI – Further Investigation?
There’s one more code you might see: FI, which stands for Further Investigation Required. This means that the inspector couldn’t determine full safety due to limited access or unclear results.
RCD Electrical can return to conduct further checks and resolve the issue efficiently.
