Electrical Arcing at Home: Warning Signs & Fire Risk

Electrical arcing happens when current jumps across a gap between conductive parts instead of following its intended path. Damaged insulation, loose connections, broken conductors and worn electrical contacts can all create arc faults. Buzzing or crackling, scorch marks, unusual heat, burning smells or visible sparking should not be ignored because arcing can generate enough heat to start a fire.

What Happens During Electrical Arcing?

In a sound electrical connection, current passes through conductors and terminals intended to carry it. An arc forms when current crosses a gap through the surrounding air instead. The IET identifies causes including worn electrical contacts, damaged insulation, breaks in cables and loose connections.

The electrical discharge can create intense local heat. If arcing continues near cable insulation, plastic accessories, timber or other combustible material, that heat can become an ignition source.

Arcing may be intermittent, so the circuit can sometimes appear to work normally between incidents. A socket, light or appliance operating again after crackling or sparking is therefore not evidence that the underlying problem has cleared.

What Can Cause an Arc Fault in a Home?

Arc faults usually begin with a defect that prevents two electrical parts from maintaining a sound connection. The fault can be inside an accessory, within fixed wiring, at a terminal or in equipment connected to the circuit.

Loose electrical connections

A terminal that is no longer making a secure connection can create a small gap where current repeatedly arcs. The affected point may also develop heat or discolouration.

Damaged cable insulation

Damage to insulation can expose conductors or reduce the separation between them. Cable damage from impact, penetration or deterioration can create conditions in which an arc develops.

Broken or damaged conductors

A conductor that is partly broken may still make intermittent contact. Movement or changes in load can then cause the connection to separate and reconnect electrically.

Worn contacts

Electrical equipment and accessories rely on sound contact surfaces. Damage or wear can increase instability at the connection and create localised heating or arcing.

Warning Signs That Need Attention

You cannot reliably diagnose an arc fault from one symptom, but several warning signs are associated with damaged or unsafe electrical connections. Electrical Safety First and London Fire Brigade both advise householders not to ignore signs such as arcing sounds, burn marks, hot accessories and unexplained tripping.

Buzzing or crackling

Crackling from a socket, switch, light fitting or another electrical point is not something to investigate by removing the cover. Stop using the affected equipment and arrange an electrical check.

Scorch marks or discolouration

Brown marks, blackening, melted plastic or other heat damage around a plug, socket or switch can indicate that a connection has been overheating.

Burning or hot-plastic smell

Hot plugs, sockets or switches

Unusual heat around an electrical accessory may indicate a poor connection or another electrical defect. Do not keep using the point simply because it remains operational.

Visible or repeated sparking

Sparking from fixed wiring, a socket, switch or damaged accessory should be treated seriously. Keep clear of the affected equipment rather than trying to inspect the connection.

Intermittent operation or tripping

Lights cutting out, appliances losing power, unexplained flickering or protective devices tripping can accompany electrical faults. Testing is needed to establish whether arcing is actually responsible.

Can Arcing Happen Without a Breaker or RCD Tripping?

Yes. Conventional protective devices respond to particular electrical fault conditions, but an arc fault does not always behave like a straightforward short circuit or earth fault. This is one reason an electrical accessory can sometimes continue operating while a poor connection is producing heat or intermittent arcing.

Arc Fault Detection Devices, or AFDDs, are designed specifically to analyse electrical waveforms for characteristics associated with dangerous arc faults and disconnect the affected circuit when appropriate. They provide a different protective function from relying only on conventional circuit protection.

AFDDs are not a substitute for repairing damaged wiring or loose connections. If there are warning signs of an existing fault, the first requirement is to identify and correct the defect rather than assume that fitting another protective device will solve it.

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. The IET confirms that the previous BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 edition remains valid during the transition period until 15 October 2026. The appropriate AFDD requirements therefore need to be considered against the standard being applied to the electrical work and the particular installation.

What Should You Do If You Suspect Electrical Arcing?

Do not keep operating equipment simply to reproduce the noise or spark. If an appliance can be unplugged safely without approaching a hot, damaged or actively sparking connection, stop using it. For fixed wiring or an electrical point showing signs of damage, leave the cover in place.

  • Do not remove socket, switch, light-fitting or consumer-unit covers.
  • Do not touch exposed conductors or visibly damaged wiring.
  • Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again.
  • Do not continue using a socket or accessory showing heat or scorch marks.
  • Keep clear of active sparking, smoke or burning electrical equipment.

If there is active smoke, fire or a developing electrical fire, get out, stay out and call 999 once you are safe. London Fire Brigade advises householders not to try to tackle a fire themselves.

Active sparking, a burning smell, smoke, serious overheating or damaged exposed wiring has urgent electrical-safety intent. In those circumstances, arrange an emergency electrician rather than continuing to use the affected circuit or equipment.

How Is a Suspected Arc Fault Investigated?

The aim is to locate the defective connection or damaged part of the circuit, not to assume that the consumer unit or the entire wiring system needs replacing. The electrician can start with the reported symptoms, affected accessories and the way the fault appears during use.

Depending on the situation, the investigation may involve inspection and electrical testing of the affected circuit, accessories, wiring, terminations and protective devices. Heat damage or a loose connection may be visible once the circuit has been safely isolated and the relevant point is opened by a competent person.

Intermittent faults can require more targeted diagnosis because the problem may disappear temporarily before returning. Where the source is not obvious, have the electrical fault investigated before deciding what repair or replacement work is required.

Finding one damaged accessory also does not automatically mean the property needs rewiring. The repair scope should follow the evidence found during inspection and testing.
